Jude

Jude is a turntable cabinet for housing a turntable, speakers, and accessories. This piece is primarily inspired by 70s postmodernism and retro futurism. The postmodern movement was about rejecting the standard and embracing personality, and uniqueness. Throughout decades, music has been an outlet to do that very same thing.

The purpose of this piece is to provide storage for a record player, speakers, and accessories, incorporating similar design elements to retrofuturism and 70s postmodernism. The general character of the piece will be playful and fun with pops of color. The piece is to be as expressive as the music that comes along with the contents.

Jude is mainly constructed of solid walnut, with details made from Valchromat, also known as pre-dyed MDF. The inspiration sprouted from the materials, specifically, the vibrant colors the Valchromat allows. When thinking of something to make with this material, funky, colorful, postmodernist designs were the first to come to mind. The postmodern movement was all about rejecting the standard and embracing personality and uniqueness. Throughout decades, music has been an outlet to do that very same thing.

In order to represent the fluidity and expression of music in this piece, I CNC cut curvy line details that flow across the face of the cabinet, simulating sound waves. Layering the colors of Valchromat in the lines called back to its postmodern inspiration. These curves double as the handles on the doors, allowing access to the speakers. However, it’s not necessary to open the doors for use as they have a vinyl mesh window to allow sound to penetrate through.

More About Jude

In 2023, I won the Student Pinnacle Award for Jude. The ISFD Pinnacle Awards are an annual competition that is meant to recognize and award the best of the best. It was an honor to have been seen in the same light as so many talented designers and companies.
